May sees the launch of two distinctly different shows in a continued celebration of the diversity of Australian artistic talents.
Seven artists who share an abstract sensibility take over Gallery One in painting / sculpture / floor work / wall work. Featuring a cohort of young rising artists – Renee Cosgrave, Merryn Lloyd, Fiona Morgan, Johanna Nordin, Nick Ryrie, Caleb Shea and Esther Stewart – who produce art driven by a focused engagement with materiality and formal elements. This is visual language written in patterned codes and textured subtleties. Here the simplest gestures tumble and repeat to produce complex outcomes.
Abstraction gives way to representation in Gallery Two, with Alexandre Prado’s playful and evocative manipulations of scale. Drawing on childhood memories of vast and magical worlds, The Smallest of Things (2nd Series) presents images of exquisite and isolated locations. Macro and micro scales combine and compete to reveal sublime nature in the smallest detail of our environments.
